Sweet treats delight the troops ...
Sweet Memory Lane has a new mission to cheer up soldiers serving overseas with a taste of home.
Soldiers from the 9th/12th Royal Lancers (Prince of Wales’s Regiment) are pictured below with their goodie bags of traditional sweets received in Afghanistan on their current tour of duty.
We are now looking for more nominations for troops who would like the morale boost of receiving a tasty tuck box of childhood favourites.
The Team came up with the idea around Remembrance Day when they realised they could get a delivery of sweets out near to Christmas. Amanda the Chief Sweet Taster has a number of friends and family with serving soldiers overseas and knew what a boost to morale it is when they receive something out of the blue.
The first delivery went to the 9th/12th Royal Lancers, because through a friend we knew one of the soldiers called Krysti Hanslow, was from Measham and serving with A Squadron, Warthog Group. Warthogs are armoured vehicles which have been recently used to support Afghan police in intercepting bomb-making equipment and ammunition.
Krysti agreed to act as 'sweet monitor' and receive the parcel and distribute the goodies. When the sweets arrived Krysti posted a picture online saying how much her troop were enjoying tucking in to the gifts from her local sweet shop.
The Team now want to send more sweets and are looking for other locally serving soldiers who can act as 'Sweet monitors' for these great gift boxes. Anyone who would like to nominate someone in the forces to receive a parcel for their troop or squadron can email [email protected] .
Customers are being invited to donate £1 when they make a purchase at the shop, on Elford Street, and when the fund reaches £50 the team will dispatch another candy consignment.
