Retro sweets advent calendar in the press again!

Well, it seems our famous retro sweets advent calendar is in the press again! You may remember last year, when we were actually forced to close our doors for a while, after our advent calendar appeared on ITV’s “This Morning” and we were subsequently flooded with orders! Once again it seems, everyone loves the idea of the calendar and journalists are extremely keen to feature it in their “top 10 lists”.  In the last couple of weeks, it has appeared online in both MailOnline and Huffington Post resulting in – you guessed it, a flood of orders. This year though, we’ve anticipated demand and so our dedicated team is happily bagging up hundreds of bags of sweets, to see you through every day from 1 December, right through to Christmas. Each pretty, spotted and numbered bag is filled with a selection of chocolate, bonbons, festive jellies and other delicious sweets for you to treat yourself each day throughout December.  Rest assured, if you want to buy the advent calendar for yourself, rather than give it to a child, you’re in good company! With only two weeks to go, we’re flat out fulfilling orders, to ensure all our customers receive their calendar, ready for 1 December.  To ensure that you get yours in time, order one now for only £22.50.  ...

Sweet adverts from the 1970s and 1980s

It’s almost back to school time for our little darlings – and time for us parents to breathe a sigh of relief and put our feet up! And whilst you’re nursing that well-deserved peaceful cuppa, we thought we’d take a trip with you down memory lane to a time before mobile phones and the internet – a time when an Android only appeared in space films, and you could still get a bag of crisps for 10p (yes, THAT long ago!) So take a look and smile at some of our favourite sweet adverts from the 1970s and 1980s and, if the fancy takes you, you can buy each and every one right here on our site! Sit back and enjoy….which advert did you love the most?    ...

Truffles for teacher

With end of term looming fast on the horizon, it’s almost time to say thanks to your child’s favourite teacher for all they’ve done for your darling daughter or son throughout the last year. There are several teachers in our family who have all admitted that their once-spacious cupboard above the kettle in the kitchen is now choc-a-block with mugs from past pupils.  It’s not that they’re not grateful – they tell me that each and every mug brings back fond memories of individual children.  It’s simply that they can only drink out of one mug at a time! So this year, I’ve done the hard work for you.  I have personally researched what a teacher would love to receive instead (and let’s face it, most of them have earned it!)  The winner hands-down turned out to be “something we can use and won’t hang around in the back of a cupboard”. Put yourself in their shoes.  After a full morning or afternoon of scolding Hamish for pulling Jessica’s hair, listening to girls’ incessant chatter about Justin Timberlake  and trying to keep the noise level above a dull roar, what would get you through ’till hometime?  In the (assumed) absence of hard liquor, we think it would be some good, strong coffee, matched with an energy surge provided by some delicious, quality chocolate truffles. And that’s just what we’ve popped into our luxurious “Thank You Teacher’s Gift Set”, priced at only £12.50 – a 100g bag of pure ground coffee, along with a box of six truffles.  They’ll be the envy of the staff room! Remember that all our gifts are hand produced and are therefore limited, so make sure you get yours well in time, before we sell...

Sweets for pop pickers!

For many of us over the age of 35, Sunday evenings inevitably meant taping the Top 40 countdown off the radio.  None of us would ever question the skill that was required in pressing Record & Play together when a song began, with our fingers ready to slam down the Pause button, just as the DJ strategically interrupted at the end.  These were the days of careful editing, with cassette tapes whirring back and forth in our endeavour to create the perfect mix tape. For those of us who weren’t too hot in communicating, romantic messages were relayed on romantic mix tapes  c/o Jennifer Rush, Phil Collins et al. whilst Donna Summer, The Bee Gees and Liquid Gold really got the party going! Sadly, it seems those days are long gone.  Not only have cassettes been replaced by CDs and then downloads, but we’ve now also been informed that the countdown is to be moved to a Friday evening.  This, say experts is to help “re-ignite excitement and reduce piracy”.  Reduce piracy?  Taping the countdown was a national pastime throughout the seventies and eighties for goodness’ sake! But we here at Ashby Treats aren’t giving up so easily.  We have such happy memories of those days that we decided to memorialise them indefinitely.  Unfortunately, none of us still have our mix tapes and cassette recorders (let’s face it, most tapes ended up wrapped around pencils in an attempt to reel them back in!) Still, this fantastic selection of vintage cassette sweetie tins are guaranteed to bring a fond smile to your face – particularly as we can pack them chock full of delicious goodies! There are five tins available in the range: –          The mix tape –          The favourite mix v3 –          The love mix –          The party mix –          The cassette recorder At only £3.50 for a mix tin and £8.50 for the cassette recorder tin, why not treat yourself to the whole lot and create a display that is guaranteed to be a talking point!  http://www.ashbytreats.com/retro-sweet-gifts/tins-of-sweets/cassette-mix-tape-tin...

Retro sweets – a taste of the past

It’s never nice to hear of a traditional sweet maker ending production and we at Ashby Treats were particularly dismayed to learn that Edinburgh Rock makers Ross’s of Edinburgh were closing the doors on its wonderful 135 year history as there was no-one in the family to take over the business. Mr Ross, the MD, has taken an offer on the factory and we wish him well on his retirement.  It’s no surprise that the firm’s outstanding stock has been snapped up by sweet shops around the country and we have our fingers crossed that the business may be taken over, so production can continue. We agree with the quote that Mr Ross gave in an interview with The Scotsman.  He said: “Traditional sweets and sweet shops are making a bit of a comeback.  People are looking for the sorts of specialised products you don’t find in supermarkets or chain stores”. In addition to adults looking to enjoy a bit of nostalgia with sweets from their childhood, we often come across people trying to find sweets of the past for their parents.  This is a lovely way of triggering memories, indulging in storytelling and bridging gaps between the ages. To honour this theme of nostalgia, we’ve launched a brand new range of vintage-style sweet tins which can be filled with all sorts of goodies from the shop.  Whether it’s a gift for an older loved one or simply a lovely treat for yourself, our tins also make gorgeous display items, long after their yummy contents have gone….
