Finishing Touches

Hello from Ashby de la Zouch, I haven’t posted a blog for quite a while, well to be honest nearly a year, so with a little persuasion, badgering and a swift kick it is time to sort it out, so where do I start … I have read the guides to successful blogging, I have even done a few drafts of what I want to say, I have shown them to friends and family, so why haven’t they hit this page sooner … to be honest there is no logical answer to this question other than my love of all things sweet probably got in the way, sticky fingers and keyboards can be a problem. So here goes, bear with and all that this week’s blog title is …. Finishing Touches. So the Chief Sweet Taster that is me, has a little passion for ribbon, tissue and wrapping paper there is nothing better than a parcel arriving on your doorstep that has been packed with crisp tissue paper and held together with ribbon … it’s like opening a present to yourself and that is where I started, with a dress I had ordered online, arriving in a gorgeous brown box lined with tissue and finished with a ribbon … the dress by now was insignificant! My thoughts then turned to my own website www.ashbytreats.com and how we present our own sweet treats … so I invested time in ensuring that whenever or whatever you buy from our online store you can be confident that your treats will arrive in a brown box, tissue lined with your goodies packed in individual stripped paper bags, suspended in wood wool and most of all the tissue folded over and held with one of our lovely Sweet Memory Lane stickers, we also pop in a little note that tells you which one of the Sweetie Team has packed your order too … I call these the finishing touches and it’s not only online that you get this service we offer it in our lovely little sweet shop Sweet Memory Lane, just of Market Street, Ashby de la Zouch in the heart of the National Forest. If you are buying something extra special from our website as a gift you can also tick to have your purchase beautifully gift wrapped as you check out from www.ashbytreats.com … our gift wrapping service uses beautiful quality wrapping paper selected for the season or occasion and finished with beautiful ribbon … if you are visiting us at Sweet Memory Lane you can chose from our lovely selection of wrapping papers yourself and the team would be delighted to wrap your gift in store. Bye for now from The Chief Sweet Taster and her team always open at...

Wedding favours and sweets for weddings

Happy New Year everyone! We hope that like us, you had a wonderful and restful time over the holidays. Traditionally around this time, we start receiving orders from brides planning their spring wedding. Wedding favours have developed from the days of sugared almonds – but do you know there was an actual symbolism behind these sweets? Originating in Italy, it was thought that the bitter sweet taste of the almonds reflected true life (albeit hardly romantic!) whilst the sugar coating was the bride and groom’s way of saying they hoped they’d experience more of the sweet side of life. Five almonds were always given to guests, representing Health, Happiness, Wealth, Fertility and Long Life. Of course nowadays, the sky truly is the limit with regards to creativity. Chocolate hearts wrapped in pink, silver, red, gold or white foil are one of our most popular choices, but increasingly we’re receiving requests for more unusual, fun wedding favours including bottles of sweets such as giant Haribo hearts or those Love Hearts from our childhood. We even have some specially designed vintage style wedding favour boxes, each with its own beautiful message. Some couples choose to replace one or two flower arrangements with sweetie designs. Candy trees for example make magnificent table displays and can incorporate anything from lollipops to Ferrero Roche, whilst large bowls of jelly babies or Smarties are deliciously tempting as well as being colourful. If you’d like to discuss how we can help you create some eye catching and memorable decorative confectionery pieces for your wedding, just pick up the phone, call in or email us – and prepare to be...

Merry Christmas from the Sweetie team!

This is of course our busiest time of year and the Sweetie team have been flat out since November, hand packing and fulfilling your orders. Christmas started at Sweet Memory Lane with orders for over 350 Advent Boxes, several weeks ago.  Since then, we’ve used: 300 candy canes 120 baskets 860 gift boxes 30 reels of red striped ribbon 8 rolls of cellophane 135 glass jars ….and at least 3 trips each day to the local Post Office! It’s nearly time for our little team of busy Sweetie elves to take a breather and put their feet up with a glass of sherry and a mince pie.  We close on Christmas Eve and will open our doors once again on Saturday 2 January.  Already we have our work cut out, with plans for the design of our 2016 now famous Advent Box starting immediately! I’ll make sure that each member of our team leaves on Christmas Eve with a selection of their own favourite treats.  For the Sweetie Lady, it just has to be a delicious tub of Cocoa Dusted Almonds with Luxury Belgium Buttons.  They go perfectly with the delicious Taylors of Harrogate Rich Italian Coffee! As always, you’ve made 2015 a wonderful year for our little sweet emporium and we’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks. Wishing you and yours a safe, joyful Christmas and all our very best wishes for...

How to make the perfect hot chocolate

How to make the perfect hot chocolate           We might be having a mild (if stormy) winter, but there are few things as satisfying and relaxing at Christmas than a proper hot chocolate.  Forget the ready mix powder you can buy in the shops – once you’ve made our recipe, you’ll never settle for anything less again! First, put full fat milk into a saucepan with 50g of intense dark chocolate and gently heat but be careful not to reach boiling point.  Stir the liquid until all the chocolate has melted and it’s at a comfortable drinking temperature.  Pour into a warmed mug and add a dash of Taylerson’s Gingerbread or Caramel Flavoured Syrup for a luxurious taste. For those of you who have a real sweet tooth, roughly dice some BARU dark chocolate marshmallow and sprinkle on top.    Finally, pop in an Aine Hot Chocolate Swirl Stick and stir the syrup into the milky hot chocolate drink. Simply add a fire, the TV and a comfy sofa, and we guarantee you’ll enjoy the taste explosion that our perfect hot chocolate recipe provides. If you’re looking for ideas for last minute Christmas presents, why not provide all the ingredients in a little pack, along with one of our beautiful Emma Bridgewater Christmas mugs?  Designs include a Christmas town, Christmas stamps and robins.  If you’re short on time though, you’ll find our Mr Stanleys Seasonal Hamper absolutely ideal.  It’s literally choc full of mulling syrup, chocolate stirrers, candy canes, dark toffee candy, dark chocolate nougat, dark chocolate peppermint cremes and pure cocoa dusted almonds – definitely one for the adults! The Ashby Treats team is hard at work, preparing orders right now, to arrive in time for the big day.  Make sure that your Christmas cupboard is well stocked with our delicious goodies, and look forward to a well-deserved rest and some scrummy evenings by the...

Retro sweets advent calendar in the press again!

Well, it seems our famous retro sweets advent calendar is in the press again! You may remember last year, when we were actually forced to close our doors for a while, after our advent calendar appeared on ITV’s “This Morning” and we were subsequently flooded with orders! Once again it seems, everyone loves the idea of the calendar and journalists are extremely keen to feature it in their “top 10 lists”.  In the last couple of weeks, it has appeared online in both MailOnline and Huffington Post resulting in – you guessed it, a flood of orders. This year though, we’ve anticipated demand and so our dedicated team is happily bagging up hundreds of bags of sweets, to see you through every day from 1 December, right through to Christmas. Each pretty, spotted and numbered bag is filled with a selection of chocolate, bonbons, festive jellies and other delicious sweets for you to treat yourself each day throughout December.  Rest assured, if you want to buy the advent calendar for yourself, rather than give it to a child, you’re in good company! With only two weeks to go, we’re flat out fulfilling orders, to ensure all our customers receive their calendar, ready for 1 December.  To ensure that you get yours in time, order one now for only £22.50.  ...
